The staff at Baltimore Beat, along with our partners at Stem & Vine, are hosting our first donors-only event. On October 22, we’re offering a live puzzling event with Black Crossword creator Juliana Pache. It’s free for donors, and each ticket includes one free drink.
Baltimore Beat can’t exist without donors. Their support means that we can create news that everyone can access, and that our Beat Boxes are maintained.
You may have seen Pache’s crossword puzzles, which place emphasis on terms and clues from across the Black diaspora, on Baltimore Beat’s website or in the physical paper.
We first came across Pache and her work when Rolling Stone wrote about her last summer.
“For this project, I don’t have or want to think about how anyone else [outside of Blackness] responds or receives it,” she told the magazine. “That doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible. Everyone is welcome to play this puzzle, but this puzzle is made with Black people in mind.”
“That way of thinking syncs perfectly with my reasons for starting Baltimore Beat,” said Baltimore Beat Editor-in-Chief Lisa Snowden. “There are so few places in this world that treat the brilliance, culture, and art of Blackness with the dignity it deserves. Black communities are often thought of last.”
